As a time variable, wate.r age is one of the important evaluating indicator of the process of material exchange and transportation.In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the Jiulong Estuary and the Xiamen Bay on the basis of the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code(EFDC), and then the concept of water age is applied as to calculate and reveal the spatial and temporal variations of ages of the study water body.The result shows water age value of the Xiamen Bay appear to be larger in the Northwest and smaller in the Southeast, and water age gradually increase from open sea to the top of the bay, which range from 5~10 days in the area of Big and Little Kinmen to 65 ~ 70 days in the area of the top of the Tongan Bay.
