Influenza A viruses cause annual epidemics and occasional pandemics with potentially severe consequence for human health and the global economy.In mid-February of 2009, an outbreak of sever respiratory illness (SRI) started in the Mexican town of La Gloria, Veracruz.However, the causative agent was unknown.On April 17, the Mexican Health Authority contacted the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) requesting assistance for the SRI cases.On April 23, NML determined that the SRI cases were caused by a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus (S-OIV).Shortly thereafter, this virus had spread to numerous countries, which warranted the declaration of"Pandemic (H1N1) 2009" by the World Health Organization on June 11, 2009.
