翻译界讨论倍数的翻译问题已有好几次了。应该说,问题是极明朗的,为什么旧事又重提了呢?86年第3期《中国翻译》林穗芳同志在关于英语倍数译法问题一文中说:“在书刊中对英语倍数的译法仍然存在混乱现象,一个自古以来就有的普通数学概念,同时存在两种不等值的译法,无论如何是说不过去的。”之所以仍然混淆不清,笔者认为不外乎三点:(一)译者不明中、西倍差概念之区别所在;(二)西化式的汉语令读者费解,徒增疑窦;(三)某些词典、教学参考书对倍数的注释、引例前后矛盾,增加了问题的复杂性。
