　　This study was designed to investigate the effect of chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) on carotid body (CB) sensitization and the respiration frequency (RF) and to verify the role ofROS.Sprague-Dawley rats were subject to treatment with the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger N-Acetylcysteine (NAC, 80 mg/kg injection subcutaneously for 6 wks), CIHH (simulated 5 000 m altitude, 6 hours per day for 6 wks), and CIHH plus NAC.The RF was recorded in conscious rats through telemetry system.The carotid sinus nerve activity (CSNA) was recorded by the whole nerve bipolar electrodes recording techniques.The RF increased to a peak then decreased to a stable level within the first hour, and kept in plateau level within the 2nd-6th hour in hypobaric chamber.CIHH inhibited the increase of RF and facilitated the CSNA response during acute normoxia hypoxia.NAC treatment could abolish those effects.CIHH can induce ROS-dependent respiratory response, argument of chemoreceptor activity and anti-acute hypoxia effect.
