In this paper we reported a bio-fuel cell with glucose oxidase as anode promoter, which can utilize directly glucose to generate electricity. The anodes were prepared by putting the mixing slurry of platinum based catalysts and glucose oxidase on the carbon papers (Toray). The catalysts used include Johnson Matthey 40 wt% Pt/C catalyst and lab-made Pt-Ir/C catalyst (20 wt% Pt,4 wt% Ir) respectively. All the measurements were carried out in a two chambers cell separated by a Nafion membrane,at room temperature. The phosphorate bafful solution with 5% glucose was used as anode solution, and oxygen was used as oxidant. The measured open circuit voltages for Pt/C-Enz anode and PtIr/C-Enz anode are 0.6V and 0.55V respectively. And it was found that the PtIr/C-Enz anode can achieve a higher current density and a higher power density than Pt/C-Enz anode. The current density could be high up to 1mA/cm2 which was higher than that of fuel cells that only platinum catalyst was used as anode or only microbes was used as anode.
