Tb3+-activated SiO2-B2O3-BaF2-Lu2O3-Gd2O3 scintillating glasses and transparent oxyfluoride scintillating glass ceramics containing BaGdF5 and BaLu2F8 nanocrystals were prepared by high temperature melting-quenching and thermal treatment method. The density, X-ray diffraction, SEM, transmission spectra, excitation spectra, emission spectra under UV and X-ray excitation and lifetime of samples were investigated. The study shows that the BaGdF5 and BaLu2F8 nanocrystals are existence in the glass ceramics and play an important role in the scintillation mechanism of these glasses, the density of glass ceramics higher than the glass and an increase in the heat treatment temperature results in an increase in the glass ceramics density, a blue shift in the excitation spectra of glass ceramic specimens and a decrease in Tb3+ ions lifetime of glass ceramics. The emission intensity of Tb3+ ions of transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics is enhanced compared with the precursor glass and the optimum temperature of heat treatment is found to be approximately 730 ℃C.In addition, the energy transfer efficiency of Gd3+ and Tb3+ ions has been observed in the glass and glass ceramics.
