The MTSAT-1R has conducted rapid scan operations and provided images of Japan and its neighboring area (20°-50°N., 120°-150°E.) as frequently as five minutes during daytime in summer since 2011 for the purpose of monitoring severe convective weather or volcanic ash plumes that can possibly affect the air traffic. It can be expected that such high frequency data are also beneficial to high-resolution NWP models as they contain information associated with atmospheric motions at smaller space and time scales than normal observations at every 30 minutes.
