Since mesozooplankton assemblages in coastal and estuarine waters contain species of broad feeding behavior, ranging from strict carnivorous predators to herbivorous grazers, the community ingestion rate of phytoplankton is a balance between the direct consumption of phytoplankton and the indirect trophic cascade effect resulted from the consumption of microzooplankton, the major grazers of phytoplankton.
